The Stevens Institute of technology is a private research university in Hoboken, New Jersey. Founded in 1870, it is one of the oldest universities of technology in the United States and the first in the United States to specialize solely in mechanical engineering.

 

The campus includes Hoboken’s highest point, Castle Point, and several other buildings in the city. Stevens was founded in 1868 by Edwin Augustus Stevens and has more than 5,500 undergraduate and graduate students from 47 states and 60 countries in Asia, Europe, and Latin America. It is classified as “R2: Doctoral Universities – High Research Activity”.

 

The university has two national control centers designated by the United States Department of Defense and the United States Department of Homeland Security. Two members of the Stevens Society, alumni or professors, received the Nobel Prize: Frederick Rines (class 1939) in physics and Irving Langmuir (chemistry, 1906-1909) in chemistry.

The Stevens Institute of Technology is named after a family of talented designers and engineers who ran everything from an old Hoboken farm to a thriving town. In 1784, John Stevens purchased the land from the Stevens Institute of Technology, who later converted the British steam locomotive to American standards for domestic production.

Martha Stevens oversaw most of the family’s community service activities in Hoboken, including the establishment of the Church of the Saints as a free Episcopal church, the Founder’s Hospital, and St. Mary’s Hospital as a birthing center. The firsts years

Stevens Institute of Technology was founded in 1870 and was originally devoted to mechanical engineering. first course was a unique and rigorous curriculum based on the European Polytechnic Model of Engineering (after the French and German Faculties of Natural Sciences and Polytechnics) rather than the usual seminars at that time.

Stevens is made up of four academic schools: Charles W. Schaefer, Junior School of Engineering and Sciences, School of Business and Systems, School of Business, and College of Arts and Letters.
